Scott Rendell
Cambridge Utd 0-0 Altrincham
Cambridge United failed to pull off a final-day upset after being held to a goalless home draw by Altrincham, much to the delight of Burton Albion.
The Brewers lost 2-1 to Torquay, but still gained automatic promotion as Gary Brabin's men failed to break down the stubborn visitors.
Scott Rendell had an amazing chance to help the U's' cause early on, but he failed to connect with a header at the back post.
Then Robbie Willmott saw his dipping cross evade everyone only to land on top of Altrincham's net.
On the 20-minute mark, Warren Peyton launched a rare attack for the visitors, but his long-range effort was tipped over the bar by U's keeper Danny Potter.
Despite dominating possession, United failed to create any clear-cut chances towards the end of the first half.
After the break, stopper Stuart Coburn was equal to any effort Cambridge could muster and superbly tipped over Jai Reason's powerful drive.
Wayne Hatswell and Dan Gleeson both went close, before Lee Phillips's late header was saved by Coburn.
The stalemate saw United finish as runners-up and they will take on Stevenage in the play-offs.
Cambridge bookings: Bolland, Willmott.
