Kenna leaves Harriers for Galway job

Kidderminster Harriers defender Jeff Kenna has left the Blue Square Premier club to fill the vacant managerial post at Eircom League Premier Division side Galway United.

The veteran defender takes charge with immediate affect after penning a three-year contract at Terryland Park on Monday.

Billy Clery, who has served as caretaker manager for the past few weeks, has been appointed as Kenna's assistant.

"I have been trying to get into the coaching and management side of things for the last season," Kenna told Galway's official website.

"I am delighted and thrilled to be given this opportunity to work with the board and Galway United. There are some good young lads coming through.

"Hopefully I can add something to that and that can only benefit the club."

Kenna can count Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Derby County amongst his former clubs and is also a former Republic of Ireland international.

Despite seeing a man of Kenna's ability and experience leaving Kidderminster, manager Mark Yates had words of encouragement for the 37 year old.

"He's a great player and you always know what you're going to get from him," Yates told the Kidderminster Shuttle.

"He's won the Premier League but has come down and put in a really good shift for us.

"I've been talking to him and have been aware for some time that he wanted to move into management.

"He's been a credit to this club and we're pleased for him that he's getting a start in management and hopefully things will happen for him. We wish him all the best for the future."
