York 2-0 StaffordYork City earned an important victory against fellow strugglers Stafford Rangers at KitKat Crescent on Tuesday evening.
The Minstermen dominated the opening half with on loan striker Daniel McBreen having two early efforts cleared off the line.
Midfielder Stuart Elliott crashed a fierce 34th minute free-kick through the wall to open their account after recalled striker Onome Sodje had been dragged back on the edge of the area.
The hosts extended their advantage four minutes later when Martyn Woolford's deep cross from the left was headed back across goal and into the far corner by McBreen at the far post.
Stafford finally forced their way into the contest after the break with veteran York-born striker Neil Grayson firing inches wide early on.
But Woolford almost added a third when striking the left-hand post, while skipper Emmanuel Panther also twice went close.
